Summary of School Demographics

Hicks High School is a rural K-12 school located in northeastern Vernon Parish.  In 1953, three local schools combined to form Hicks Elementary School, and in 1955, the school was reorganized into its present form.  The school was first accredited by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges in the 1959-60 session and has maintained such status since that time. Approximately 25% of the graduates enroll in college, 15% join the military, and the remaining 60% find employment in the various area industries or attend vocational education facilities.  The leading forms of employment in the surrounding communities are the local school, Fort Polk, offshore oil companies, timber companies, and the millwright industry.  The tax base for the Hicks school district is made up almost entirely from the timber industry with only a small addition from private property tax.  Southern Baptist and Pentecostal churches abound in the surrounding area, and Hicks students typically reflect the deep-rooted, traditional, conservative values of these institutions.  The school and community are closely related in all aspects of the school environment, from athletics and extra-curricular activities to classroom instruction .
